Spiral-cut hot dogs, 50 Sheds of Gray, and other delights

This video has changed my life. It’s the most simple yet revolutionary way I’ve seen yet to cook a hot dog! You spiral cut it so it’s like a spring made of pureed meat-stuff and not only does it cook without bending, but you get more crispy surface area and toppings will slip between the spirally bits to fully integrate into each bite you take instead of sitting on top so you get a mouthful of condiments sans wiener! My mind! She is blown!

I am not a fan of 50 Shades of Grey but I can totally get behind 50 Sheds of Grey! Brilliant satire!

Over at Women Write about ComicsMelinda Beasi talks girls comics, blogging, and international manga fandom. Melinda has a lot of intelligent things to say about comics.

Have you heard about the world’s longest invoice? If you haven’t, it’s a Web site where freelancers can add their unpaid invoices to a running sum of how much money freelancers have been bilked out of. As of my writing this post, they’re up to over $15 MILLION dollars in unpaid invoices! PaymentTab.com is a way to combat the deadbeat client. They run a ‘pay and download’ service where you: 1. create an invoice 2. upload your work 3. send a pay and download link to your client and when they pay they can download deliverables. Payments are negotiated via PayPal.

DC’s new gay character will be ‘major,’ ‘iconic’ — and apparently male – Does there need to be huge publicity about this? Maybe I’m silly but I, naturally, assumed the sexuality of superheros naturally reflects that of the general population and there’s just as many queer heros and villains as there are non-heroes and non-villains. Although, I could see wearing tights and fighting with and against super muscley dudes and tough ladies as attracting a certain segment of the queer and powered population to super-heroing/villaining.

 Comic Stuff

The Sigh – By Marjane Satrapi
I’ve liked everything Marjane has put out so far so I can only imagine I’m going to like this book.

Rose is one of three daughters of a rich merchant who always brings gifts for his girls from the market. One day Rose asks for the seed of a blue bean, but he fails to find one for her. She lets out a sigh in resignation, and her sigh attracts the Sigh, a mysterious being that brings the seed she desired to the merchant. But every debt has to be paid, and every gift has a price, and the Sigh returns a year later to take the merchant’s daughter to a secret and distant palace.

N.G.L. it sounds a lot like the plot of Beauty and the Beast. No, not the Disney version I’m talking about the version I read in a book. A book with no illustrations. The difference is in Beauty and the Beast the father stole the gift for his daughter from the Beast’s seemingly abandoned estate and the Beast demanded the daughter in return for what had been stolen.

Women Write About Comics – A new-ish site that is women writing about comics.  Full confession, it’s the brainchild of someone I know. Don’t try to tell me women have no interest in comics. Fans who say this are usually Superhero comic fans. There are more comics out there than just Superhero comics. I have an extensive collection of comics and only a fraction are traditional superhero fare.

Darkness – by Boulet
I laughed and was intrigued! It’s like Gary Stu and Mary Sue square off! It’s a great comic but it nudges into the realm of amazing because it was done in TWENTY-FOUR HOURS! I’m not worthy.

Hyperion CEO Ellen Archer: Book Publishing Business Model Is Broken – By Jeremy Greenfield

Maybe we have to drop “books” from the way we think. I think that’s keeping us from not thinking as big and broadly as we need to.

Don’t trap yourself in the “’book’ book.” It’s wonderful and it’s been wonderful for many years, but the years of printing too many books and taking them back…it’s not really a great business model and we have an opportunity to create a better business model.

Thank you! I agree. ‘Book’ needs to be replaced by ‘story’ because the word ‘book’ is associated with a specific media type. You can get to know a story across many media. Did you notice I didn’t say you can ‘read  a story’? Media means much more than written words you read. My personal consumer experience has shown that audio books are often available before softcover editions of popular author’s works

Day seven. Still not king.

I’m on day seven of no cola. Sensations I’ve felt this week: murderous rage (directed at olives and other drivers), feeling like a hollowed out pumpkin with my insides all scraped out, and my gut acting like a two-year-old who’s been deprived of candy! Despite all this, I haven’t had a drop of cola and I’m starting to get over the withdrawal symptoms.

I’ve been listening to this today.

“You’re like spaghetti; straight until you get hot.” roflmao

Last night I was describing this boss fight I’m on in my video game to C. and halfway through I realized just how horrible it sounds:

This giant, blind beast is lumbering around trying to get to this sacred place to destroy it. In order to kill this beast you must chop off it’s toes and fingers and when it falls over you have to drive a spike into its skull with, not one but, three hard whacks of your sword.

That’s really messed up!

Also, I failed to stop the lumbering beast and he ate an old lady and destroyed a sacred place and I failed to save the world. How can I face my video game again after that royal screw up?

I’m so ashamed of myself. Some hero I turned out to be.

Day seven. Still not king.
